Chip Kelly Fired

Chip Kelly has been fired as the Philadelphia Eagles head coach. Kelly had an overall record of 26-21 during his three seasons as head coach.

The timing of the firing is a surprise considering there’s still one game left in the season. It shows just how ready the Eagles were to move on from Kelly.

Kelly was hired by the Eagles in 2013 after 4 years as the head football coach at the University of Oregon, where he had tremendous success with his unusual high powered offense. The Eagles hired him in hopes that his offense will also work at the NFL level. He led the Eagles to a record of 10-6 in each of his first two seasons, making the playoffs in his first season.

Before this season he was promoted to general manager to go along with his head coaching duties. He traded away several key Eagle players, like quarterback Nick Foles and running back Leshean McCoy, for players who he thought would better fit his system. The Eagles struggled this year, and they currently have a record of 6-9. The moves, along with how the season turned out, angered many Philadelphians and executives in the Eagles organization. Today, they decided they had enough of Kelly.

What happens to Kelly now will be interesting. He’s always been thought of as a college coach. Many people say he will take a job with a high-profile college team. Others say he might take the Tenessee Titans head coaching job and reunite with his old college quarterback, Marcus Mariota.
