Dennis Wideman Hits Referee, Gets Suspended by NHL

Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman was suspended indefinitely by the NHL on Thursday after he cross checked a linesman during the Flames’ game against the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night.

In that game, Wideman was checked near the boards by Predators winger Miikka Salomaki. Wideman wanted a penalty, but none was called. Cameras caught Wideman cross checking linesman Don Henderson on his way back to the bench. Wideman wasn’t penalized and played the rest of the game. After the game, Wideman said he apologized to Henderson and the hit wasn’t intentional.

Wideman will have a hearing at League headquarters in New York City on Tuesday to explain his side of the incident. League commissioner Gary Bettman will then decide how long his suspension will be.

According to the NHL rule book, the minimum amount of games a player can be suspended for intentionally hitting a referee is 20 games. The only player to ever be given a lifetime suspension by the NHL is Billy Coutu, who was kicked out of the league after assaulting a referee after Game 4 of the 1927 Stanley Cup Finals and starting a bench clearing brawl.

NFL Playoff Preview: Conference Championship Weekend

Last week I went 3-1 with my picks for an overall record of 7-1 so far this playoffs. Let’s see if I can keep the hot streak going.

AFC Championship Game: New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos: Sunday at 2:05 pm on CBS

The last times these two teams met in the playoffs was in the AFC Championship Game two years ago. The Broncos won that game 26-16. In this years matchup, the Patriots come into the game looking like the better of the two teams, even though they lost to the Broncos earlier this year. All of their best players are healthy now and they looked impressive in their 27-20 win over the Chiefs last weekend while the Broncos struggled to get past the Steelers. If the Broncos are going to win on Sunday, they’re going to have to rely on their running game. Peyton Manning is having the worst statistical season of his career and struggles to throw the ball even 15 yards now. Their defense also has to step up and create a few turnovers in order to win.

My prediction: The Patriots have struggled to win in Denver in years past. I believe the Broncos defense makes a few turnovers to give their offense good scoring chances. I got the Broncos winning a nail bitter, 21-20.

NFL Championship Game: Arizona Cardinals vs. Carolina Panthers: Sunday at 5:40 pm on FOX

After a nail biting overtime victory against the Packers last week, the Cardinals will travel to snowy Carolina this weekend. The weather might affect a struggling Cardinals running game, who only ran for 45 yards in last weeks game. The Panthers went up big in the first half of last weeks game, only to almost blow it all during the second half. They will be without one of their top defenders, Jared Allen, but have plenty of other playmakers on defense to get the job done.

My prediction: I think the Panthers defense will be too much for Carson Palmer, who played last week with an injured finger. I got the Panthers winning, 27-20.

These are the matchups I was hoping would happen this weekend. These are the four best teams in the NFL and it should be fun watching them all play against each other for a spot in the Super Bowl.

NFL Playoff Preview: Divisional Round Weekend

I previewed the Wild Card weekend for the NFL Playoffs last weekend and while I was spot on with my picks, the scores of the games were just a tad (a lot) different than I predicted. So let’s try this again.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. New England Patriots: Saturday at 3:30 pm on CBS

Last week, the Chiefs defense made Brian Hoyer look like………Brian Hoyer. It was one of the worst postseason performances in recent memory. This week, the Chiefs will go up against a slightly better quarterback by the name of Tom Brady. The last time the Chiefs played the Patriots was in 2014 when the Chiefs destroyed the Patriots 41-14. You know the Patriots remember that game and want payback, but several injuries to key players on both sides of the ball might limit their effectiveness.

My prediction: Get ready for what I’m about to say………….are you ready? I got the CHIEFS pulling off a surprising upset by a score of 35-31.

Green Bay Packers vs. Arizona Cardinals: Saturday at 7:15 pm on NBC

These two teams played each other a couple of weeks ago. In that game, the Cardinals blew out the Packers 38-8. The Packers had a hard time keeping Aaron Rodgers upright against the Arizona defense. Although I think this game will be much closer, I still expect the same outcome as the last game.

My prediction: Cardinals win by a score of 28-21.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Carolina Panthers: Sunday at noon on FOX

This will also be a rematch of a regular season game. Back on October 18th, the Panthers defeated the Seahawks 27-23 on a last minute touchdown throw by Cam Newton to Greg Olsen. Even though the Panthers finished with a record of 15-1 and the Seahawks are a six seed, I expect this game to be as close as the last one.

My prediction: Panthers make a few more plays than the Seahawks do and and win the game 31-28.

Pittsburg Steelers vs. Denver Broncos: Sunday at 3:30 pm on CBS

The last time these two teams meet in the playoffs was the famous Tim Tebow game. In that game, Tebow threw the game-winning touchdown pass on the first play of overtime. The Broncos now have Peyton Manning as their quarterback, but Manning can’t win this game by himself. The Broncos need their running game to be effective against the stingy Pittsburgh defense. In last weeks win, Steelers star players Ben Rothlesburger and Antonio Brown suffered injuries. Although Rothlesburger will play, Brown will not. That’s a huge loss for the Steelers offense.

My prediction: Broncos win by a few touchdowns.

NFL Back in LA

After the 1994 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams relocated to St. Louis, Missouri and the Los Angeles Raiders relocated back to their original home of Oakland, California. Since then, residents of the second largest city in America waited for the country’s biggest sports league, the NFL, to return to them.

That wait ended last night.

Late last night, reports came out that at the NFL Owners meeting that was taking place in Houston, Texas, with approval from the owners, an agreement was reached between the Rams and the League to relocate the Rams back to Los Angeles for the 2016 season.

Back on January 4th, three teams, the Rams, the Raiders, and the San Diego Chargers filed for relocation. The Rams filed their own bid that included building a new stadium in Inglewood, California. The Raiders and Chargers filed a joint bid that included building a separate stadium in Carson, California in which both teams can play in. After hours of negotiations last night, it was announced that the Raiders and Chargers have broken up their partnership and the Raiders will stay in Oakland and the Chargers will have until next year to decide if they want to relocate.

Speculation of the Rams moving back to Los Angeles began in January 2014 when Rams owner Stan Kroenke bought 60 acres of land in Inglewood located near the old Los Angeles Forum. A year later, Kroenke announced his intentions to build a stadium on the site as well as an entertainment district around the stadium. Construction for the stadium began on December 21, 2015.

The Rams leave St. Louis after 22 seasons. The Rams won the Super Bowl in 2000 and played in another two years later.

The Rams were previously located in Los Angeles from 1946 to 1994. They won an NFL championship in 1951.

College Football National Championship Game Preview

The College Football National Championship Game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers is tonight. Hopefully this game will be better than the two semifinal games in which Alabama and Clemson blew out their opponents. Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s game from the view of a 20 year old college football fan.

This will definitely be a defensive game, as both teams have the two best defenses in the country. What I’m looking forward to seeing most tonight, other than the camera shots of girls that go to Alabama and Clemson watching the game in the stands, is seeing the matchup of Derrick Henry against the Clemson defense. The Heisman winner will have his hands full against the best defense the Tide has played against all season. If he can’t get the job done, it’ll be up to Jake Coker to try and get the ball past the Clemson secondary. On the other side of the ball, Clemson quarterback Deshawn Watson will have to channel some of the magic Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly used to beat Alabama earlier this season. The Alabama defense has had some problems against dual-threat quarterbacks in the past, but you can bet that Nick Saban has been busy at work using his magical Satan…..I mean coaching powers to fix that aspect of the defense in time for tonight’s game.

Although Clemson comes into the game as the only undefeated team in college football at 14-0, Alabama is the favorite in this game. There is a reason for this. The only time Alabama has been an underdog since 2008 was this season in the game against Georgia. Alabama ended up murdering Georgia so bad they had to fire their coach at the end of the season and replace him with an Alabama assistant coach. I think this will end up being a good game, but in the end, you never bet against Nick Saban and the Tide. I got Alabama winning by a few touchdowns.

After tonight, we begin that fun time of year where we have to wait eight months to watch college football again. Yes!!

NFL Playoff Preview: Wild Card Weekend

The NFL playoffs begin tomorrow and once again, the Bears didn’t make it, which sucks. But there are some intriguing matchups that will take place within the next two days.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Houston Texans: 3:30 pm Saturday on ABC

The Chiefs began the season with a record of 1-5 but won their last 10 games of the regular season to make the playoffs with a record of 11-5. The Texans made the playoffs by winning the weak AFC South division with a record of 9-7. Not the sexiest of matchups to begin the playoffs, but it should be an interesting game nonetheless.

My prediction: Chiefs win a close game by a score of 24-20.

Pittsburg Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals: 7:15 pm Saturday on CBS

The Steelers made the playoffs on the last day of the regular season with a win and a Jets loss. They take on division rival Cincinnati, who will play with their backup quarterback, former Alabama quarterback A.J. Mccarron.

My prediction: Steelers will give fits to Mccarron and the Bengals offense all night and win by a score of 28-7.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Minnesota Vikings: 12:00 pm Sunday on NBC

The Seahawks enter the playoffs as the most dangerous team in the  league right now. Although they’re a 6 seed, they have playoff winning experience and just dismantled the Arizona Cardinals, one of the best teams in the league, in the last game of the season. Not only that, the Seahawks played in Minnesota earlier this season and destroyed the Vikings. However, the Vikings just won the NFC North division championship after a surprise win in Green Bay and have looked impressive the past couple of weeks.

My prediction: The weather during the game is going to include below zero wind chill, so that should prevent the Seahawks from winning by too much. Seattle wins by a score of 16-3.

Green Bay Packers vs. Washington Redskins: 3:30 Sunday on FOX

The Packers have lost six of their last ten games after starting the season 6-0. Meanwhile, the Redskins won the mediocre NFC East division and Kirk Cousins won’t stop yelling “YOU LIKE THAT!!!” at petrified children.

My prediction: As a Bears fan, I don’t know if I can get through saying this without puking but I think if the Packers can keep Aaron Rodgers upright they’ll end up winning aaaaaaaaaaaaaand I just puked.

Let’s just hope these games don’t end up being blowouts like most of the college bowl games. Bruce Willis didn’t die on that asteroid just so we could end up watching horrible NFL playoff football right after watching horrible college playoff football.

Ryan Johansen Traded for Seth Jones

One of the things I love most about sports is when a big trade happens. A big trade happened yesterday in the world of hockey.

The Columbus Blue Jackets traded forward Marcus Johansen to the Nashville Predators for defenseman Seth Jones. The two-player trade itself doesn’t look too big, but it is for several reasons.

Both Johansen and Jones are former number 4 overall NHL Draft picks and are potential future superstars. Johansen is 23 years old and was expected to be the Blue Jackets number one center for years to come. Jones is 21 years old and was expected to be a future top two defenseman for the Predators. This trade changes the outlook for the future of both teams.

After this trade, the Blue Jackets are now officially in rebuilding mode. Expected to be a playoff contender before the season started, the Jackets lost their first seven games and fired their head coach, Todd Richards. They replaced him with John Tortarella, a former Stanley Cup winning coach who is known as a tough disciplinarian to his players. There were several reports that Johansen and Tortarella didn’t like each other and Johansen wanted out. Nashville got what they needed by acquiring Johansen. Struggling offensively for most of this season, the Predators now have the top line center they’ve been looking for and an offensive contributor that can help jumpstart the offense for a Predators team currently competing for a playoff spot.

In Seth Jones, the Blue Jackets are acquiring a future franchise defenseman that is just starting his career. Jones was expected to be a top two defenseman with the Predators, but got stuck behind Shea Weber and Roman Josi in the lineup. With the Blue Jackets, Jones can play a larger role and grow into the star defenseman everybody expected him to be with the Predators.

Trades like these add intrigue to the course of a season. Hopefully we see more of these types of trades as the season goes on.
